If your bathroom fan and light work off the same switch, it is working as an occupancy sensor. The theory is that if the light is on someone is in the bathroom and the fan should be running too. That's a good start, but the problem is that the fan doesn't run long enough to get rid of all the humidity in the bathroom and that can cause trouble. The SmartExhaust switch is exactly that: a smart exhaust switch! Flip the switch on and the light and the fan come on together. Flip the switch off and the light goes off . . . but the fan stays on. And it does even more than that.

Humidity is a very serious problem in homes, and bathrooms are a primary source of humidity. Removing the pollutant at the source is very effective and a properly installed and controlled bath fan can accomplish that very well. The fan can't accomplish anything if it isn't running!
The SmartExhaust switch combines the strategy of using the same switch for the fan and the light and takes it much, much farther. First of all, it's a light switch. Flip it on and the light goes one. Whoopee! The fan goes on at the same time because someone is probably in the bathroom otherwise the light wouldn't have been turned on. After a few minutes or maybe half an hour, someone flips the switch off and the light goes off. Whoopee 2! But the fan doesn't go off. It keeps on running for awhile removing the moisture (or odors) that were probably produced in the bathroom. How long does it run for? Anywhere between 0 and 60 minutes depending on where it was set on installation. If you decide that you don't want the fan to run at that particular point, flip the switch on and off quickly, and the delayed off doesn't happen.
But wait. There's more. What if you wanted to use this fan as your Primary Ventilation System, the fan that is designated to change all the air in your house and get rid of the pollutants that are emitted all day long from the furniture and the pets and the carpets and other things? The SmartExhaust can be set up to do that too. You can set it to run anywhere from 0 to 60 minutes an hour (all the time). If the switch is manually used for a bathroom "event", that time is subtracted from the whole house ventilation run time.
